Cool but beautiful fall morning with fog blanketing the hills. Because of the cool summer I am noticing that the leaves are dying before turning the normal brilliant yellow color.

Hi Jefferey! I can't believe there are 3 Snoqualmie dwellers on the blog! I'm not too far from you. We live closer in towards the retail center but I run in the Heights 3-4 times per week. I run quite early in the morning -- usually finish by 6:40.

Have you got another marathon on your calendar?

From jefferey on Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 13:53:26

I usually don't get up until 6 or 6:30. There are sure a lot of runners at the ridge, we need to get them signed up I guess. I know Sean Sundwall from church. I was searching for his blog and found this site, which is great. I am considering 3 marathons for next year.

Newport Or(May) with Sean and his sister Summer. The new Seattle Rock n Roll marathon in June or Salmon, Id where I have some family and the race is run almost exclusively on dirt instead of road. That one is in Sept.

How about you? What's next?

From Snoqualmie on Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 20:49:22

CIM (Sacramento) in December.

After that, I'm looking at Newport or Eugene in May, Seattle R&R in June. Looking forward to having you as a blog buddy.

Last night we had spaghetti for dinner. Had a large serving and plenty of garlic bread, probably more than I should have. Carter had his wisdom teeth out and couldn't eat much of anything but he wanted a chocolate milk shake. Had one of those too with that canned whip cream. Wow that is a good combo! Not the best thing for you but tasty. No wonder I am not getting any faster.

38 F with some wind. Nice and clear gorgeous morning after the sun came out.

Decided after running about a mile and a half that I was starting to get too slow just running easy miles since the marathon 4.5 weeks ago. So where I normally turn around I went up ONE MILE HILL. OK it's not really called that but since it is almost exactly a mile from the bottom of the hill at Douglas on the Snoqualmie parkway to the top of the hill, that's what I call it. About 80% of the hill is definitely up and it's not an easy grade.

I decided to keep my pace the same as I had been running. My heart rate went up to 173 on the hill but I kept pace. Last time I tried to run the hill really hard I ended up screwing up my lower back so just a nice pace this time.

Then at the bottom I ran the ridge trail that paralells Douglas St. to Carmichael which is about a mile and that kept the heart rate up in the 160 range. Then a .5 mile easy run with the wind at my back and red leaves flying off the trees(it was cool) and finished walking half a mile.

That felt really good!!

Forgot to add earlier that I saw Sean Sundwall driving while I was running. Usually it is just the reverse. He was probably down at the high school doing some speed work.I remember last fall our church(ward) was doing a service project one Sat. morning. Sean ran a tempo or speed run then ran 10 miles(20 total)  to the house where we were working and then he worked about 3 hours raking leaves and grass etc.

Hey, Jefferey, I know that hill! I usually turn off at the entrance to Deer Park and stay on that street until it curves around back on itself. It's a nice loop. Only once, I continued up the Bad Hill after doing my Deer Park detour. I'll probably start going up there more often now that Ridgestone is inhabited. I like to stay near civilization. :)

I'm so glad you're on the blog. It's wonderful to have another local here. So many of the Utah runners all know each other and run familiar territory.

Yes- Sean is amazing. He's like having a rock star living in the neighborhood.

It sure was quiet up your way about 5:15 this morning! And dark. I ran my zig zag route all the way up The Heights (like an S or switchbacks to make more mileage), then came back and went down and back Elderberry, ran around Curtis, Cottonwood and the Stellar Park areas, then down to Crestview. Glad the wind has subsided. Have a great day.

I was soaked today at the end of my run! Wow! It just didn't stop. My glasses got wet even though I was wearing a hat. Hey, we are looking at having the Sundwall family over for homemade pizza in the near future. Would your family be interested in coming too? Do you run on the roads or sidewalks?

Glad I won't be running until this afternoon when it clears up. After doing a speed workout in those ridiculous winds yesterday, I wasn't ready to wake up early for 10-12 miles. You running the turkey trot on the 15th? I need to ask your son and daughter if they will be willing to volunteer.

I am planning on running it. However, Heidi is due to give birth right around that time. Tori said she might run it but I am sure Carter would like to help. I will mention it to them. Maybe Amanda can run the 1k also. Are you guys free for pizza on Sat.?

That looks like a wonderful run. A quad burner though! I often think we should get "bonus miles" for workouts like that. Did you see Sean's entry for Monday? You fed him too much. hehehe Cheers.

From jefferey on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 12:18:05

We call parts of that run the "Hammer of the Quads"(Led Zeppelin). There was one 1 mile stretch where we came down 800 feet. On a trail that can get precarious.

Sean did have 1.5 pizzas. They weren't big but he said he hadn't eaten since breakfast. I don't know how he does it.

Okay, I really hate running in the dark so Mon. and Tues. I slept in thinking of running in the afternoon. Worked late so no running 3 days straight. That doesn't work too well.

Beautiful Sunrise over Mt. Si this morning made it easier after starting in the Dark.

This morning decided to try some 800's on a hill.

1.75 easy then

uphill 800 in 3:42 with 400 jog down

uphill 800 in 410 with 400 jog down

2.75 easy

Great workout! It's true -that sunrise was unbelievable! Wish I'd had it while running, but enjoyed it from home. Get thee to REI and buy a headlamp -- makes the dark a lot more bearable. :D

From jefferey on Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 10:44:08

Yes it was a great workout. Nothing like the miles you are putting on though. Nice work!! I wish that the dark wasn't making me want to stay in my nice warm bed. Next week should get back to being easier getting up with the time change. How did your husbands concert go last week?

From snoqualmie on Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 09:09:42

Concert - It went quite well. Thanks for asking. The harpist had a devilishly hard part and I was so happy not to be playing it! I was their harpist since 1994 until this year. But the concert went well, my daughter and I enjoyed the music, and DH was pleased. Many children attended, in costumes, since this is their "family concert" and they let the kids parade across the front of the stage in their costumes right after intermission. Very cute.

When I input my 10k time into the runners world training calculator it says my so called "easy" miles should be 8:54 pace. OK it's time to do it. This morning felt good for the first 3.25 miles at 8:44 pace since there are more uphills on the way back home I wanted to get a cushion.

Finishing pace was 8:53 so I beat it by a second.

Went trick or treating last night with Sam and Larry Shaw and the Gibson boys.  Had a few too many chico sticks. (YUMM!)

Trail run planned this morning but high winds prohibit running in amongst the trees. I've heard trees falling when running at Cougar Mtn. before with not much wind at all. I don't like running the hills of Snoqualmie either in heavy wind.

Bruce called at 6:50 to say let's bag it. Was going to sleep in then I remembered that only 13 miles run this week so it's off to the treadmill for 10. First 5 easy in 40 minutes then did strides for one tenth of a mile on each of the last 5 miles.

The Brooks Radius shoes have got to be my favorite shoe ever. Slightly heavy but oh so comfy. Used them before the marathon to run from Snoqualmie Pass to North bend on the John Wayne trail for 22 miles and my feet hardly felt it. Should have worn them on the marathon too. Live and learn.

This is what the treadmill readout said upon completion today.

Sean runs 3 miles of hills at a 6:00 pace so it's all relative to what we can do. The great part is to keep it going and try to improve. Today was a pretty intense trail run session. We started up clay pit road for about .5 mile then onto the trails. We hit the backside for the hard 1 mile up then steep 1 mile down then another 1 mile up.

Bruce was feeling it and I had a little left so I went tot the top of clay pit road then booked it down .95 miles in 6:11.

Last night I had 2 servings of the chili verde that I made two nights ago and it was fantastic! Not nearly as spicy as I normally make it. Even Heidi could handle it. After roasting the chilis this time I stripped the seeds and ribs out which probably took most of the heat out.

Just remember that 6:11 was partially downhill. Don't get too envious. The chili however was awesome. When I blended it the first Thursday night it was a gorgeous green color. Then I kicked it up a bit with some home done chili powder which turned it slightly darker. Then when we warmed it up the next two days it has just gotten browner. With chunks of pork loin and no beans it is pretty darn good. Hope you are able to work out while you are gone.

I was really hoping to get in a run sometime today. Heidi needed some sleep in the am after being up with Nova quite a bit during the night. Then, planning to run when home from work but that didn't work either. So hopefully something tomorrow morning. Not sure if I will be able to run the 5k on Sat. if Heidi doesn't get some sleep. Babies are so great but they do require time...

I'll bet it's frustrating not to be able to get out there. Beautiful weather today. But you have the most legitimate excuse in the world. You'll be back on the roads very soon I'm sure. Take care.

From jefferey on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 19:37:39

Yes, very frustrating with the gorgeous weather. I just finished all that had to be done today. It's too dark to do a 5k on the roads so I am going to do one on the treadmill and hopefully I can kick it up a notch. Are you going to do a write up on the race? I will watch your blog for it.

From Snoqualmie on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 10:05:52

Of course I'll write a race report! Who me, pass up a chance to blab on and on about my running? lol

No race for me this morning- Amazing Grace, Nova that is decided to wake up multiple times and then I had baby duty from 3 am on (so Heidi could get some sleep) and was wiped out. Had tons to do around the house and for business so never finished until 5pm.  Have to get some kind of run in I thought. I decided to run a simulated 5k race but didn't want to be dodging cars in the dark so it became a treadmill sim.

1.5 mile warm-up @ 9:22 pace Then stretched Quads, Hams, calves and hips

2.5 miles at 6:00 pace (Felt quite doable from the start)

At 2.5 upped the pace a notch each .1 mile then 4:26 pace last .1.

Finished somewhere under 18 minutes.

1 mile cool down @ 7:24 pace

.9 Mile cool down @ 8:20 pace

.5 mile cool down @ 9:22 pace

.2 mile walk

For some reason I can run a treadmill faster than real life. Probably because it helps you move and you don't have to carry the extra weight around. Definitely had some juice left. I only ran Mon. and Tuesday this week and then baby showed up Tues. afternoon. My lungs and muscles felt pretty good. I was able to rest from running this week but not sleep much. Look forward to running a real 5k sometime.

OK I feel a little foolish. It looks like my treadmill is set for metric rather than standard measurements. When I have been thinking all along that I am killing it on this machine, actually it's been killing me. There is no way that the pace I was running on it today was 11 minute and change pace per mile. From now on when I run the TM have to gauge by feel. Felt I was doing about a 9 minute per mile pace today on it.

Not enough sleep and ran the tread just in case Heidi needed me for something. Hope to get back on the road here this week.

Thanks a lot! What day was your son born? You've got a great looking family! I think your kids are faster than I am. Nova is finally sleeping up to 3.5 to 4 hours at a time at night. I don't know how my wife does it. It kills me to not get a decent amount of sleep but she just keeps chugging along.

From sarah on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 21:32:16

Our baby was born on Oct 24th..so 3 1/2 weeks ago. I keep chugging along too..sort of but the sleep deprivation does get to you sometimes. Like today I think I was more out of it than right after the baby was born. Our baby is sleeping 3-4 hours at night too but that's definitely not enough.. you know it gets better soon..good luck!! BTW your daughter is very cute..good looking kid. :)

From jefferey on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:22:02

Most all of these are brooks that I got on sale at last years truckload sale. My fave and the very most comfy shoe to run in is the radius 6 which I don't think they even make now. This years sale was last weekend but I couldn't make it. Darn! All the shoes are 20, 25 or 30 bucks a pair.

Wore my adidas supernova that I had given to Tori to run at school. She didn't like them so brought them back home. These are not my favorite shoes but I like to rotate them all.

Didn't feel sore at all today even though yesterdays workout was a tough one. Not sure why no soreness or stiffness though.

TM workout again. Too much wind outside today. Lost my glasses one time when it was really windy and don't want to get new ones again.

I figured out how to switch from metric to english measurement on the tm. It's hard to go by what this machine says. Running at an 11 minute/mile pace was where my normal 9 min. pace is for my HR when running outside. Readout said I went a little over 5 miles but I count it as 6 due to hr and time running. Also walked 3 minutes before and after the run.

Calories burned. I just try to eat semi-responsibly. Lots of popcorn with butter and grated cheese every once in a while. Ice cream every now and then. And the killer at this time of year **EggNog** which tempted me last night and had a small glass. By the way our 4 year old is Amanda Rose.

From Snoqualmie on Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 14:49:10

Nice run, Jeff. Glad to hear Nova is sleeping more. When my girl was a few weeks old, and my MIL was staying with us (supporting me in what I'm about to tell you), I decided to let my DD sleep on her stomach -- as every baby of my generation did. That night she went 6 hours and I felt like a completely new person. (Later I learned that of the SIDS deaths in King County, nearly 50% are babies who are put on their backs to sleep; not a very convincing statistic.) Everyone has to choose their own way of course, but I can certainly relate to the blissful feeling of getting a full REM cycle. :)

Supernova shoes. Should probably get these on the shoe log.

50 minutes running with about 5 of that a warmup walk. 3 minute walk cooldown. TM run to loosen the legs from Turkey bowl football yesterday. There are muscles that I don't use very often that during football get tweaked. I'm sore!

For Thanksgiving dinner one of my nephews(10 yrs. old) proposed a "toast" of our water glasses. Most of us said to"family" which of course is what life is all about to me. My mother in law was however tempted to say "Dishwasher" because they recently had theirs replaced.

I was reading this and it touched me because of the Thanksgiving season.

From Thomas S. Monson "A Sanctuary from the World".

When we are tired or ill or discouraged, how sweet the comfort of being able to turn homeward. We are blessed to belong and to have a place in the family circle.

At times we may become bored or irritated with home and family and familiar surroundings. Such may seem less than glamorous, with a sense of sameness, and other places may sometimes seem more exciting. But when we have sampled much and have wandered far and have seen how fleeting and sometimes superficial a lot of the world is, our GRATITUDE grows for the privilege of being part of something we can count on--home and family and the loyalty of loved ones. We come to know what it means to be bound together by duty, by respect, by belonging. We learn that nothing can fully take the place of the blessed relationship of family life.

All of us remember the home of our childhood. For most of us, our thoughts do not dwell on whether the house was large or small, the neighborhood fashionable or downtrodden. Rather, we delight in the experiences we shared as a family.

Cougar Mtn. trail run. After Thursdays football and jogging and yesterdays TM run my legs are kind of sore. It took about a mile to get into the run then it was a great one.

Misty with a little rain. The trails were sloggy in places. My pants were so muddy when I finished that I just tossed them, not just because they were muddy but they were getting holes and old as well.

Pace ended up being between 11:20 and 11:25.

From Snoqualmie on Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 09:52:04

Thanks, Jeff. The train ride is a ton of fun but I do not sleep well on trains, even though we got the biggest family sleeper car. (Meals included, not the best nutrition imo.) Today, after getting a nice 8 hrs (and getting reacquainted with vegetables) I'm starting to feel human again. Also, we all still feel like we're on the train, that inner ear thing like when you get off a boat. DH is still on vacation from work so I get to try a run when it's light out - yay. My legs feel really good compared to the usual recovery period. I prefer to think I was better trained than that I didn't run hard enough, lol. I'll blog about it if I can manage to jog today. Cold, Windy and Rainy(with snow mixed in). Lovely weather for a TM run inside the garage.  A little speed at the end.

My daughter went outside and ran a couple of miles and said she couldn't see during parts of her run as the snow/rain mix was pelting her hard.

Hill Workout day on the TM. Wow! This is getting boring running inside!! Not enough to get me out in the Cold, Dark, and Wet yet. I can handle 1 and sometimes 2 out of the 3, but not all 3. According to my fancy new inside/outside thermometer that I got for Christmas it was 39 degrees outside.

25 minute warmup then the plan was to run 3 - 3/4 mile hills at a steady state pace with inclines of 3% 5% and 7%. Ended up doing 3,4,5% just to be sure I could finish strong.

HR High on the 3% incline topped out at 162 then easy run of 5 minutes HR down to 137

4% HR high was 167 then after 5 minute easy was down to 141

5% HR high was 171 then after 5 minute easy was down to 143

Then about a 8 minute gradual cooldown.

This run felt great and I could have done more but it's been a while since doing any hard hills.

Most of the sleet that fell on me today was up in the Heights. Your neighborhood? You get some of the worst of it. I'm glad the TM is working out for you and keeping you in the game. Happy New Year!

Sorry about that! I will have a talk with Cold Miser to see if he can take it easier on us. Nice work on the mileage!! That's pretty darn consistent running.
